What are the top three issues that you will solve as a Board of Education member?
- End the social experimentation of shifting students away from their local communities and return to a neighborhood schools’ model. Families should be confident the home they move into, and the schools they are zoned for, don’t change with the political winds.
- Eliminate wasteful spending by working with staff to review all current processes and practices for awarding contracts, approving budget requests, and allocating taxpayer dollars. Find the waste, improve the efficiency, and maximize taxpayer savings.
- Increase transparency by developing an effective process for sharing how and why the board makes their decisions, especially my own.
What unique skills & experience do you bring to the Board of Education?
With three decades of leadership experience, including creating a successful IT business, I know what it takes to balance budgets, make tough decisions, and do what it takes to maintain a high level of success. While the fundamental goal of HCPSS is to serve our students, they cannot be effective in meeting that goal when handcuffed by rogue employees, outdated policies, technology and ineffective strategies. As a business leader, I will bring both my business skills and a parent’s heart to my role as school board member to make sure we solve the issues facing our school system today.
Why do you want to serve on the Howard County Board of Education?
The short answer is that I love my kids and I love my community. Howard County continues to be the best place to raise my family. My children love their schools, but recent solutions to our ongoing struggles threaten to keep HCPSS on the wrong track. Rather than wait for someone else to step up, I made the decision to be that leader. I believe in giving back to my community and want to use my skills and experience as a business leader to help Howard County schools continue to be the best in the nation.
